Chapter Four
Day Two
They say that law enforcement is supposed to help people in trouble.
Like most kids growing up Gable was taught that, when in trouble, he should go to the police. He learned to respect 9-1-1 from his parents, from his school, even from cartoons and television shows where the police were heroesâexcept if a man in a cape showed up, but even then, the police would proudly stand in the background.
The logical thing to do when Avery went missing was to go to the police.
So he did. Multiple times.
Like most people who are taught to go to the police when in trouble, Gable put all of his trust into the detective he had met. Maurice Ashford seemed like a nice enough man. Trusting smile, reassuring words, remorseful look each time he failed.
Of course, now, all of that has changed.
As Gable lays in his bed, wide awake despite the sun not being anywhere near the rising point, he canât stop reliving that last moment before he was blessed with unconsciousness. The hatred that leaked from that man, the red hot fear in Averyâs eyes, the violence that had been directed towards him and everything in-between. Now, when he thinks back to those haunting words, âIâm sorry son, but, heâs dead,â he feels the man panting hotly against the back of his neck, chuckling through a barrage of derogatory endearments.
Fag.
Queer.
Homo.
Gable thinks of all of the times he cried in front of this man, completely crumbling in front of him. Maurice mustâve been laughing at him the entire time. âHa ha, look at the little faggot cry.â Then he would disappear from the scene to go after another pretty face, another âpretty little faggot.â
It has kept Gable awake all night.
Avery is sleeping next to him, having exhausted himself with his video games and script reading. Gable canât even make himself look at him as he sleeps. During his last escapade Avery had been so happy to see him. Gable was able to hold him, to smell the hints of dust and ocean breeze shampoo in Averyâs hair. They embraced each other in a way that only lovers could. He was so sure that it was over, that they would be able to go home together.
Even now, Gable is wary about trying to walk, remembering the echoing BANG before the bullet made impact with the back of his leg.
Sometimes, when Gable closes his eyes, he hears the painful squeak of the detectiveâs shoes against the warehouse floor. Sometimes, he sees Averyâs jeans fall to the ground. He didnât see what Maurice Ashford did to his boyfriend, but heâs not stupid.
He knows what this man did to Avery.
Hateful words written on the bodies, small praises accompanying each terrible phrase. FAGGOT and beautiful go hand in hand; they are one in the same for the killer, the detective. These attractive young men had caught his eye but he hated himself for feeling anything towards them. He decided to take it out on each of them, punishing them as if they were the ones who had forced him into feeling aroused by another man.
